Coronavirus Advice
What can I leave the house for? Everyone must stay at home to help stop the spread of coronavirus. You should only leave your home for very limited purposes:
shopping for basic necessities, for example food and medicine, which must be as infrequent as possible
one form of exercise a day, for example a run, walk, or cycle – alone or with members of your household
any medical need, including to donate blood, avoid or escape risk of injury or harm, or to provide care or to help a vulnerable person
travelling for work purposes, but only where you cannot work from home
Important
These reasons are exceptions – even when doing these activities, you should be minimising time spent outside of the home and ensuring you are 2 metres apart from anyone outside of your household.
What if I think I have Coronavirus?
Stay home if you feel unwell. If you have fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical care early. Call in advance. Follow the directions of your local health authority.
And if somebody in my house has Coronavirus symptoms?
Self isolate for 14 days
What is self isolation?
You should not leave home at all, even for food, medicine or exercise
What is social shielding?
Some people (including children) who are at very high risk of severe illness from coronavirus are now advised to rigorously follow shielding measures to keep themselves safe. Shielding is a way to protect people who are extremely vulnerable from coming into contact with coronavirus by minimising all interaction between them and other people. Current advice from government is:
-
If you have already got a letter or text, follow the social shielding guidance.
-
Hospital clinicians and GPs are reviewing the list of people who are extremely vulnerable from COVID-19, and more letters are being sent.
-
If you have not been contacted, stay at home and follow the social distancing rules for everyone. If you later receive a letter, follow shielding advice.
If you have received a letter you should register with the government to tell them if you need coronavirus support for vulnerable people who are shielding. You can register yourself, or on the behalf of someone else. You can do this online, or by calling 0800 0288327, the government’s dedicated helpline.
